How to Get a Job in Web3
I used to stare at spreadsheets all day.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good spreadsheet.
Lining up those numbers in perfect format is especially cathartic.
A few keystrokes to sum up thousands of numbers scratches my analytical itch.
But doing this 12 hours a day at a job I hated left me burnt out and searching for something more.
It was around this time I fell down the Web3 rabbit hole.

The bull market was in full swing and I was seduced by the excitement and promise of the future.
I spent all day researching new projects, investing and trading.
But it took me over a year to find a job in Web3 because I wasn’t sure where to find the jobs or how to go about it.
So here is a brief overview of how I did it and some ideas on how you can too.
How My Journey Began
One day a friend of mine sat me down and explained why crypto would change my life and the world.
It didn’t take much for me to become obsessed.
The bull market was ramping up.
I was spending my work days researching new projects, trading and voraciously consuming info from Crypto Twitter.
Like most people, I was riding high on the optimism of the bull market.
I made a few good trades that outweighed all the bad ones. Another 10x and I could quit my job, and ride off into the sunset without a care in the world.
But bull markets don’t end that way.
Rather than ride off into the sunset it’s more like getting hit by a bus.
LUNA / UST blew up.
Centralized crypto lenders went bust.
And for the grand finale: FTX destroyed billions of value overnight.
But let’s back up a bit.
The Power of a Newsletter
As the bull market was approaching its peak I was invested in a crypto project that I was sure would send me into an early retirement.
I started spending more and more time in the Discord channel, Medium and Twitter. I searched for every bit of information I could find about this project.
If this project was a celebrity, I was its stalker.
During my research, I realized information was spread out over all these channels which made it hard to have a clear view of what was going on.
Since I was searching for this info anyway, I started to post what I found on Twitter. Immediately I started getting new followers left and right.
There was serious demand for this info. In the end, Twitter wasn’t the right medium so I started a weekly newsletter that summarized all the weekly action.
Within a few weeks I had hundreds of subscribers, thousands of readers and the project devs were messaging me on Twitter.
I had never started a newsletter before, so I just assumed this was pretty normal.
Oh, I forgot to mention, during all this craziness, I quit my job at an investment fund to focus 100% on crypto.
Looking back I quit my job at the Mount Everest peak of the bull market.

Classic error.
Then the bull market ended and the bears arrived.
Almost overnight the project I was invested in was down 90% and interest in my newsletter vanished.
Fear in the market was at an all time high. And I was feeling it.
I have a wife and two kids. My son was born just weeks before this.
Those were some sleepless nights I never want to experience again.
Then I got a message on Twitter from a CEO of a Web3 startup.
He was a reader of my newsletter and offered me a job on the spot as their Head of Content.
I had never written professionally before.
Key Takeaways
Web3 is still such a nascent industry there are an almost endless amount of opportunities. Most people think you need to be a coder to get a job.
When in reality, there are significantly more non-coding jobs to do in Web3.
What I realized in my journey is there is a lack of good content in Web3. Projects need content to help with adoption.
Getting a job in Web3 is not as difficult as I first imagined. Here are some key lessons I learned that can hopefully assist you in your search.
There isn’t a big hierarchy in Web3 like Web2. You don’t need to go through hiring managers and levels of HR people. Twitter and Discord let you direct access to people in the space.
Unsure where to start? Pick out a few projects that you like. Follow them on Twitter and spend time in the Discord. Be active in Discord and talk to the moderators and the devs. Offer to do things for free. These projects have an insane amount of work to get done and not enough people to do it. If you start helping they will notice.
Twitter Spaces are a great way to get in touch with people in the industry. DM interesting people after a Space to connect.
Give, give, give. You hear this all the time because it's true. If you do stuff for free to help other people you will get noticed. This can easily lead to a job.
Write content. The easiest way to get a job in Web3 is to write good content. Share it on Twitter, Discord or a newsletter. There is a huge need for good content in the space. At my day job I meet with other projects all the time who cite the need for good content.
If a former finance bro with no writing experience can get a job writing in Web3, so can you.
Don’t wait.
Get started now.
