This isn't normal...

Hello my fellow legends.

I’m ecstatic you are here with me another week.

I’m worn out and energized at the same time. I’m guessing you can relate.

Not enough sleep but also too much stimuli in life.

In today’s Savant Letter we have:

  • One Web3 narrative: This isn’t normal…

  • One writing tip: Music is the key

  • One story: Goddamn sopa

This Isn’t normal…

Web3 Twitter is…different.

I mean this in the best of ways.

Let me explain.

When I first joined Web3 Twitter (the corner of Twitter where all the Web3 action happens) I was taken aback by how friendly people were.

I would get DMs from people asking me how my Web3 journey was going and if I needed any help.

My initial reaction was:

I’m sorry?

What do you want from me and what kind of scam is this?

Turns out people were just really friendly and wanted to help.

I come from a finance background. People do NOT just message you out of the blue asking if they can help.

This isn’t normal.

But it’s intoxicating.

Eventually I started DMing other people asking how they were doing.

Cheering them on.

Getting on calls with them to offer advice and encouragement.

It felt good.

And I realized it creates this virtuous circle: to grow your account, you need to help others and give away your knowledge.

And the people you help also need to do the same thing to grow.

And on and on the cycle goes.

It’s brilliant.

And it isn’t normal in many industries.

And so this week I spent more time than I should have to come up with a guide on how to get a job in Web3.

Let’s be honest, a big part of it is because I want to grow my account. But I also want to help other people join the Web3 movement.

If you’re interested you can find the guide below. I hope it’s helpful and you gain some knowledge.

Then you can pass that knowledge on and someone else can do the same.

And on and on.

Music is the key

I go through phases where I’ll write in complete silence vs. listen to music while I write.

This all comes down to preference.

I know people that listen to Tool and Rage Against the Machine while they write.

That would explode my brain.

But one thing I have been experimenting with is listening to music according to how I want to feel.

Writing is all about emotion, right?

So now I’ll scour playlists on Spotify and put on a sad playlist if that’s how I want my writing to be.

If I’m excited and I want that to come out in my writing I’ll put on some 80’s pop (I know, it’s a guilty pleasure).

It’s amazing how music is like this electric current that flows from your speakers to your ears to your fingers onto the page.

Test it out next time you write.

Don’t overthink it.

Put something emotive on.

Write without editing. Then look at it the next day. You’ll see that emotion in the text.

Pretty cool huh?

Goddamn Sopa

The Portuguese are obsessed with soup.

“Sopa” as they call it.

Parents here in Portugal feed their kids nothing but soup.

A diet entirely composed of soup.

Even the pediatricians here strongly advise against feeding your toddler anything but soup.

It’s both hilarious and odd.

We recently put our one year-old son in a daycare that requires us to pack his lunch.

The people at the daycare look at his lunch and think it’s filled with the MOST ridiculous things (banana, yogurt, animal proteins, complex carbohydrates - the works).

Silly foreigners.

But every day we pick him up they tell us he needs more food.

“Esta com muito fome,” they say.

He’s hungry.

So we doubled his portions.

The next day.

“Muito fome” again.

Sopa is the answer they said.

You must bring him soup!

My wife and I were unyielding.

“I will be damned if we are going to be feeding him soup everyday,” I shouted. And my wife nodded in outraged agreement.

Next day:

Muito fome again!

“He needs soup,” they said.

And so today I went to drop off my son at the day care shaking my head and muttering “goddamn sopa” under my breathe, because we finally relented and packed some soup.

And you know what?

It felt good to just let it go.

It’s fucking soup for god’s sake.

Let it go.

If you’re having a “sopa” moment in your life.

Just let it go.
